This month’s professional spotlight features Ghenet Besera. Ghenet is a Fellow at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Learn more about Ghenet and her work below.
Could you briefly explain some of your responsibilities in your current career role?
I work on a variety of projects and conduct research related to reproductive health, maternal health, and infant health. Some examples of specific topics I have worked on include, teen pregnancy, men’s reproductive health, and pregnancy health.
How did you come to decide that this was the right career path for you?
I had an interest and passion for public health since my freshman year of college. Witnessing the health disparities girls and women of color around the globe face, specifically related to their sexual and reproductive health, further motivated me to pursue a career in public health and work to close the gap on health disparities.
Is there a philosophy that drives your career?
Never stop learning. I try to take advantage of every opportunity to learn something new and I feel this has helped me grow as an individual and professional.
What do you consider to be your greatest professional accomplishment?
To date, I would say being the lead or co-author on several publications and presenting research at major public health meetings and conferences during my time at the CDC.
What’s one piece of advice you would give someone looking to transition into your line of work?
Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. In public health, the opportunities are endless. I believe it is important, especially as a student, to get experience in different types of settings (e.g, non-profit, government, academic), so you can get a feel for the different opportunities available and what you like best. I was able to do this by interning and volunteering throughout my time as an undergrad and grad student.
Outside of all of your hard work and efforts toward building your brand, what do you do for fun? Hobbies?
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and traveling.
