Could you briefly explain some of your responsibilities in your current career role.
I’m a Store Director for Madewell, a women’s denim company. Outside of developing and driving our business through brand awareness, my main responsibilities are recruiting and developing management teams for future growth in store and multi-management roles.
Is there a philosophy that drives your career?
Managing and developing in a realistic and honest way is essential to my everyday philosophy. I’ve been in similar roles as some members of my team so I understand the importance in communication that drives results. In any field it’s key that we are always on the same page with our teams and working towards the same results, regardless if it’s individual or team successes.
What do you consider to be your greatest professional accomplishment?
I’ve been with Madewell for over 7 years and I’ve seen it grow from 15 stores on isolated coasts to over 100 across the country; because of this I’ve been able to jump start my career and work in some of our top markets. I honestly believe that what you put in is what you get out! I feel very grateful for the opportunities and exposure I’ve been given thus far.
What advice do you have for people beginning to lead a team in the workplace?
The best advice is to set a standard for your team. It is so import to create a guideline of expectations both individually and as a team; having clearly defined roles and responsibilities really help maximize performance and results.
What tips do you have for leading a multigenerational or diverse workforce?
Know your team- we all work in different ways and have our own leadership styles so it’s important to understand what motivates each member of your team.
Outside of all of your hard work and efforts toward building your brand, what do you do for fun? Hobbies?
My family is everything so I try and see them as much as I can. I also love spending time with friends. If you know me you know I have a slight obsession with indoor cycling, so I typically unwind that way!
Ruth i am very proud of you as a sister
