The Eritrean Diaspora Network Scholarship Committee is excited to announce our 2021-2022 awardees. This is our third year of being able to positively impact the lives of Eritrean students and we hope to keep it going for many more. After careful review of 54 applicants, 9 were selected to receive scholarships in the amount of $2000. Here are their stories and their expressed gratitude to our donors.
Fal Iyoab
Fal Iyoab is a rising freshman attending the University of Washington-Seattle. Fal intends to major in communications and cultural anthropology. She hopes to combine her love for cultures and creativity to share stories and to give representation by becoming a journalist or a museum curator. This scholarship will help cover tuition costs and ease the transition for the first year of college.
Amare Mills
Amare is a budding freshman at UC Davis and is planning to double major in African American Studies and Engineering. This scholarship will help pay for his tuition as he explores the many pathways to his future. Amare is ecstatic to have the financial support of the Eritrean Diaspora Network Scholarship and wishes to someday give back to the Eritrean community that has supported and helped him grow so much over the years. It is with a gracious heart that Amare accepts this scholarship and the support of the EDN community.
Arsema Tedros
Arsema is a sophomore at Berkeley City College who plans to transfer to a UC College to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences. She is an aspiring health care worker interested in pursuing a specialty in pediatrics and neonatal intensive care. This scholarship is so appreciated as it will help support Arsema in her educational journey.
Yonas Asmerom Abraha
Yonas is a Senior at the University of Washington studying Electrical and Computer Engineering. He just completed his third summer internship and is looking forward to what he will be doing after he graduates next year. This scholarship is much appreciated and will be assisting Yonas in paying for tuition this upcoming year. Yonas is very grateful for the support of the EDN community which will not only help further his education, but also enhance his involvement within the Eritrean community.
Luwam Seyoum
Luwam is a junior at George Washington University, majoring in Finance and minoring in Political Science. She hopes to pursue a career in asset management and would like to use her knowledge in that role to create a community program that promotes long-term money management in the Eritrean community. Luwam will use the EDN scholarship to pay for her tuition. Luwam said “I am very grateful and ecstatic to have won the Eritrean Diaspora Network scholarship! I would like to thank the scholarship committee and donors! I truly appreciate your support in my college endeavors and I hope to give back in a similar fashion in the near future.”
Danait Tesfai
Danait is a junior at Howard University working towards her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. She hopes to continue her education to become a Nurse Practitioner and open up her own clinic to help serve underrepresented communities and bridge the healthcare gap. The EDN scholarship will help her pay for her tuition and other educational expenses this upcoming year. Danait is really grateful to not only be the recipient of this scholarship, but to be a part of such a strong and supportive community and looks forward to advancing the mission of EDN.
Nahom Berhane
Nahom is a first year MBA student at MIT Sloan School of Management. He has over seven years of IT consulting experience and is looking forward to staying in tech, but pivoting to Product Management after completing his two-year MBA program. This scholarship will be assisting Nahom in paying his tuition for the upcoming academic year. Nahom is very excited to be a part of the EDN family and is looking forward to sharing his experiences working in tech and applying to business school.
Milen Reta
Milen Reta is a first year graduate student at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse. She is pursuing her Master’s Degree in Medical Dosimetry after working in the field of Radiation Oncology for the past seven years. As a Radiation therapist she has had the opportunity to provide direct patient care to cancer patients and play a vital role as a member of the Oncology team. She has decided to pursue her graduate degree in order to expand the knowledge that she already has and gain expertise in her line of work. As a Medical Dosimetrist she hopes to provide patient care that leads with compassion and integrity. She expressed that it means the world to her that the EDN organization is assisting so many young Eritreans in pursuing their goals towards a higher education. “Having the support of your community feels like having the support of family.” Milen plans to use the funds from the EDN scholarship to pay down some of her tuition. Her program is accelerated and does not allow her to work full time, so having the EDN scholarship will help a great deal in helping her complete her degree. She is extremely grateful to EDN for supporting her through this scholarship.
Milka Tewolde
Milka Tewolde is a third-year, dual-degree Doctor of Pharmacy and Master of Business Administration candidate at High Point University. She aspires to be a commercial leader in the pharmaceutical industry as well as continue to build The Pharma Collective, her social platform aimed to capture the influence that the pharmaceutical industry has on consumers, economics, and health behaviors from the perspective of diverse student pharmacists. She is so grateful to be an EDN scholarship recipient, because it will support her as she takes on extracurricular activities to enhance her exposure to the pharmaceutical industry. She expressed how EDN truly exemplifies an extension of her personal passions of helping her community become successful and then giving that forward to the next generation of Eritrean students. Milka feels EDN has made an impact on her life and she cannot wait to be in the position to help contribute to the mission and vision of EDN.
