#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Observed on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, #Giving Tuesday is movement centered on celebrating philanthropy, encouraging generosity, and empowering change.  In commemoration of the charitable giving season, Eritrean Diaspora Network (EDN) invites you to join the movement, and support our continuous efforts to build solidarity and engagement within our community by giving back this #GivingTuesday, November 28, 2017.

 

Driving Transformative Change

Driven by our unwavering commitment to the advancement of the Eritrean Diaspora, EDN has continued implementing initiatives focused on empowering our community. Over the span of the last two years, EDN has executed diverse programing across our Recent Arrival Support, Professional Development, and Civic Engagement platforms.  

In 2016 EDN:

  • Expanded the breadth and reach of the Professional Development Newsletter, by addressing real world issues faced by professionals
  • Featured  the professional accomplishments of Eritreans within the Diaspora in various Career fields including law, business, finance, and entrepreneurship
  • Conducted virtual and live seminars on achieving financial freedom and adopting strategies for long-term investing
  • Successfully facilitated 11 new mentee mentor relationships, through the EDN Mentorship program  
  • Hosted a Thanksgiving fundraiser and coat drive for the homeless in partnership with Central Union Mission  
  • Celebrated Eritrean Independence by hosting a week long of events to welcome Eritrea to the Quarter Century Club

In 2017 EDN:

  • Published the first installment of the EDN Recent Arrival Toolkit: ‘Employee Rights in the Workplace’, available in both Tigrinya and English on our website
  • Presented a 3-part Professional Development Series on Leading from Within, equipping Eritrean professionals with tools to become leaders within their fields and communities
  • Revamped the Professional Development Newsletter. Notably, launching the AskEDN column to better connect with our readers
  • Hosted a Know Your Rights Workshop and Immigration Law Clinic, offering free legal advice on navigating the current immigration climate and handling run-ins with immigration officials,  and provided reference materials to empower those dealing with immigration officials
  • Co-hosted and Immigration Executive Order Town Hall with multiple African diaspora focused organizations
  • Partnered with Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI) to raise awareness around immigration reform, and promoted immigrant rights with specific focus on the Executive Order, immigration and customs enforcement, and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Dream)

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, with your help EDN hopes to continue making strides towards transformative change. Here is a glimpse of what EDN has in store for 2018 and beyond:

  • Foster professional growth amongst Eritrean professionals through expanded circulation of the Monthly Professional Development Newsletter, a Professional Development Seminar Series focused on practical skills and job hunting, and a Professional Development conference  
  • Advocate for immigrant rights and promote awareness around the current state of immigration reform  
  • Support the integration of Recent Arrivals into their new communities by providing pertinent information around health, human services, and legal rights through additional installments of the Recent Arrival Toolkit
  • Provide opportunities to build and cultivate meaningful personal and professional relationships, through various social events
  • Educate Eritreans on issues faced in our communities, while working with other  community organizations to advocate for and engage voters leading into the 2018 Mid-Term Election
