How did you come to decide that starting your own business was the right thing for you?
I decided to start my own business for many reasons – I sincerely enjoy enriching the lives of others through decorating and sharing the art of organization, which is key to Event Planning. I also wanted to be in charge of how I use my time and energy, set an example of entrepreneurship and self-sufficiency for my son, and family thereafter.
Could you briefly explain some of the steps you had to take to start your own business?
The first step I took was a chance! After decorating and renting out my party equipment for a few events, I created a formal business plan. With a business plan in place, I was able to stay focused on my goals which helped me prioritize events and create a signature brand.
Describe how the women in your life inspire you?
There are a diverse set of women in my life who inspire me, firstly my mother who taught me foundation of business, customer service, building relationships, and money management. Additional women in my life include: aunts, cousins, friends, professors, and mentors alike who contributed in numerous ways, from supporting my ideas, challenging me to think critically, and instilling a mindset of community service.
How important is it to network and partner up with other business owners?
Building connections and relationships are pillars of any business or career path. It’s not only about what someone can do for me, but how can I support them in a way that I too may grow in knowledge, experience, and if a byproduct of that interaction is a broader customer base then we all win. Partnerships and working with the community to support one another is how we can all grow and share our passion.
What do you consider to be your greatest professional accomplishment?
My greatest professional accomplishment is the day I saw my logo on a corporate sponsorship board at an event, it was so gratifying to see my logo on such a huge display.
What are three pieces of advice you would give someone looking to start their own business?
- Take your time and do your research. Investment on the front end will help you overcome unforeseen challenges faster.
- Build a support team comprised of people that are your champions, yet will also help you grow, challenge you, and hold you accountable.
- Anticipate challenges and remain flexible while honoring your goals.
How do you balance the various aspects of your life, and run your own business?
Sleep, exercise, and having a solid routine with built in flexibility! Having a morning routine is key while the support of my fiancé, family, and friends are like the fuel to my car. With regards to work, for every customer request, I ask myself does it align with my goals? Do I realistically have the capacity to support this event without comprising the quality? Then add it to my calendar and keep it going.
Outside of all of your hard work and efforts toward building your brand, what do you do for fun? Hobbies?
Family outings and good ole quality time with my wonderful family.
